Wisdom of the Founder of Tasawwuf

Hast-o-Neest
Institute of Traditional Studies & Arts

Tasawwuf means scrupulously maintained moral character and religious discipline which one must cultivate and observe towards all the creatures of God in the interests of peace and happiness of mankind” – Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chishty (r.a.)

Hazrat Imam Ali is unanimously acclaimed by the Sufis as the founder of tasawwuf as he combined mystical intuition with the firmest grasp of Islamic theology. He is regarded and remembered by all Muslims – and not just the Shi’a – as the most important spiritual figure in Muslim history after the Prophet himself.

The Prophet (s.a.w.) said:
“I am the City of Knowledge and Ali is the Gate of the City”
“Whoever takes me as his Maula (Master) should also take this Ali as his Maula.”

Hazrat Shaikh Ahmed Sirhindi Naqshbandi Mujaddid e Alf Sani says that Hazrat Imam Ali was designated as Shah-e-Wilayat-e-Kubra..(Letter No. 134, Maktubat Shaikh Ahmed Sirhindi, Vol.3)

rNahjulbalagha: Al-Sharif Al-Radi Abu al Hasan (Baghdad, 970-1015) is the compiler of letters, sermons and sayings of Imam Ali (a.s.) known as Nahjul Balaghah - Peak of Eloquence. A number of al-Razi’s teachers were Sunni and Mu’tazili. He had intimate friendly relations of mutual respect with eminent contemporary scholars, poets and writers professing different faiths – an indication of his broad humanism and tolerance.
