OUR USTADS
This month’s Takiya Hast-o-Neest presents its rich galaxy of teachers of classical music:

Riaz Hans
– teaches ‘Beginners & Childrens’ music class at Hast-o-Neest. Multi-talented Riaz Hans is a Composer, Singer and Tabla player. A student of Ustad Parvez Paras - he also learnt from the renowned tabla master of the Punjab Baaj, Ustad Altaf Hussain Tafu.

Shahzad Khalil
– teaches Sitar at Hast-o-Neest. An upcoming sitar player, Shahzad Khalil is also a regular part of Hast-o-Neest poetry and prose recitals.

Reza Shaukat
– teaches Tabla at Hast-o-Neest. Son of legendary table maestro Ustad Mian Shaukat Hussin Khan, Raza Shaukat possesses a deep and subtle knowledge of the art of classical Tabla.

Rustam Fateh Ali Khan
– son of legendary Classical Vocalist of the Patiala Gharana, Ustad Bare Fateh Ali Khan. Rustam Fateh Ali is the leading classical vocalist from the younger generation of Patiala Gharana singers. He teaches Classical Singing once a week at Hast-o-Neest.

in Pre-Modern South Asia

(Assistant Professor Religion,  Gustavus Adolphus College  (Minnesota, USA)

The talk will be a critique of the common notion of a perpetual opposition between Hindus and Muslims in South Asia that came about due to British colonial historiography; examining the many diverse facets of the Muslim-Hindu encounter.

Dr. Fuad Naeem's dissertation research focused on the nineteenth century Muslim scholar and theologian Muhammad Qasim Nanautvi, founder of the influential school of Deoband, his particpation in religious debate and dialogue between Muslims, Christians, and Hindus in South Asia and the transformations and reconfigurations of Islamic scholarly traditions in the modern period. His interests include Islamic intellectual traditions in South Asia, Muslim encounters with religious others, Islam and modernity, the Qur'an and its exegesis, and Islamic philosophy, theology, and esoteric traditions.

Hafiz of Shirazi (1315-1360, Shiraz, Iran) is to Iranian Love Poetry what Shakespeare is to English Drama. His poetry at times takes a philosophical overview of Love and God. Hafiz’s poetry has immense influence over t
he literature of Persia and is often recited by heart even today in Iran and Afghanistan.

in viewing and in a post-viewing discussion on a 2006 American epic drama film
 that blends elements of fantasy, history, spirituality, and science fiction.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the film consists of three story lines: 
a modern-day scientist and his cancer-stricken wife, a conquistador and his queen, and a space traveler in the future who hallucinates his lost love. The story lines reflect the themes of love and mortality.
